Why are the first words of a radio transmission cut off?

Last updated:

Missing first words can result from speaking before the radio is ready, RF conditions, delayed audio startup, or a problem in a shared radio/network path. First establish whether it happens on transmit, receive, one client or every client.

  1. Check talk-permit timing. Press PTT, wait for the configured talk-permit indication, then speak a short test phrase. The Solo guide specifically calls for waiting for the acknowledgement tone.
  2. Compare directions. Test PC-to-radio and radio-to-PC separately. Use the same known-good field radio and phrase.
  3. Compare clients. If one PC clips but another does not, check that PC's selected microphone, audio settings and resource load. If every client clips, investigate their shared donor-radio/Gateway path.
  4. Check RF and network conditions. Compare a good RF location with the failing location, and a local LAN client with a remote client. A technician can assess coverage, jitter, loss and call-setup behavior.
  5. Record the evidence. Note exact timestamps, software/radio versions, selected channel, call direction and any disconnect or error occurring at PTT.

A simple phrase such as “one, two, three, four” makes the missing portion easy to identify during a controlled test. Check both live audio and any available recording.

If waiting several seconds changes the symptom, report that observation to CTI; it helps isolate startup timing but is not a universal repair. Do not apply an old case's firmware change or network adjustment without matching the actual configuration.
