Can a dispatcher call one radio without calling the whole group?

Last updated:

Yes, on radio systems and interfaces that support private calling. A dispatcher can select an individual subscriber and initiate a private call instead of transmitting a group call to everyone on a talkgroup.

Both depend on the radio system. Private addressing is separate from encryption.

  1. Find the intended person/radio in the Subscribers panel.
  2. Confirm that the selected contact is an individual radio with the correct radio ID and assigned radio path, rather than a group contact.
  3. Use that panel's PTT control and wait for the talk-permit indication before speaking.
  4. Release PTT to receive the reply. If the call fails, check the specific failure reason and the radio system's busy/hangtime rules.

The radio must be reachable, correctly addressed and programmed for the supported call type. Voice compatibility alone does not establish private-call support: an ordinary analog voice interface and the APX 4500 COR/PTT interface do not provide the same functions as a supported digital control-station connection.

For a hotel, warehouse or maintenance team, an individual call can keep a supervisor's question from interrupting the entire group. It still uses radio resources and must follow the site's operating procedure.

Private call is an addressing function, not an encryption claim. Check RF privacy/encryption and IP transport protection separately if the content requires them. Solo also provides individual-recipient selection where the connected radio system supports it.
