Can a dispatcher check whether a radio is reachable before calling it?

Last updated:

Yes, when the radio system supports Radio Check through the selected control-station interface. Dispatch can request a response from an individual radio before the operator attempts a voice call.

Select the individual subscriber in the Subscribers panel and use Radio Check. Check that the contact's radio ID and assigned Gateway are correct. A disabled control can reflect the system type or interface rather than a fault; compare it with the applicable feature table.

If no response arrives, check radio power, RF coverage, the selected channel, radio programming and supported signaling before concluding that the radio has failed. The APX 4500 basic talk/listen interface does not provide these digital subscriber-control functions.

A successful response establishes that the radio answered that request at that time. It does not establish that the operator heard an instruction or that a later call will succeed. Follow the site's voice acknowledgement procedure when confirmation from the person is needed.
