An RoIP gateway connects a radio interface to an IP network. A radio repeater receives and retransmits RF signals as part of the radio coverage system. They serve different roles and can be used together.
In a RadioPro installation, a control station radio connects to the Gateway. PC and mobile clients reach the Gateway over a network, and the control station communicates with field radios through the existing radio system.
A repeater can help field radios communicate through a strategically located RF site, subject to the system design, terrain, antennas, and radio programming. Adding a Gateway does not increase a portable radio's transmitter power or repair a radio dead spot.
Example: a warehouse's radios may use an existing repeater for building/yard coverage. Adding a compatible control station and RadioPro Gateway lets a remote office join that system over IP. Radio users still rely on the repeater coverage; the office user relies on the network path to the Gateway.
A site can also use a compatible control station on a direct/simplex channel without a repeater. Select equipment based on whether the requirement is RF coverage, network-based access, or both.
